Inis Oírr to host weekend workshop on dry stone walling
A workshop on dry stone walling will take place in Inis Oírr from Thursday 20th to Sunday 23rd September 2012. The weekend workshop, organised by the Galway County Council, Comhar Caomhán Teo, and Comhar na nOileán Teo. Participants will also build a traditional Aran stone wall under the direction of stonemason Patrick McAfee.
The workshop will include talks on the place of stone walls in the cultural landscape. John Shaw-Rimmington, President of Dry Stone Walls Across Canada will give a talk on ‘The new Dry Stone Wall Tradition in Canada’. Alexandra Morosco, Director of Stonefest, Seattle, USA will give a talks on ‘Working with stone: a passionate path’ & ‘The Inheritance of Stone: where the past and future meet creating work today’, while Tomas Lipps, President of Stone Foundation will give a talk about ‘Building with stone: an overview of the traditions of building dry and mortared walls and structures that have evolved around the world that will include examples from Japan, Israel, France, Spain, Greece, Scotland and North and South America’. Participants are required to book their own travel and accommodation on the island, and are advised to bring suitable clothing including sturdy shoes and work gloves. The course is aimed at stone wallers, farmers, property owners, architects, builders, craftspeople, archaeologists, local authority staff, Rural Social Scheme participants, FÁS employees, local history enthusiasts, REPS planners, and anyone with an interest in stone walls.
