Galway City Council Heritage Office is hosting a Heritage Conference on archives and written sources in the Harbour Hotel, Galway City on Thursday October 4th 2012. The general theme is Archives: Celebrating Ireland’s Archival Heritage. The conference has a broad range of high calibre speaker. In order to capture as wide an audience as possible and to promote the heritage and tourism value the proceedings of the conference will be published and made available widely in both book form and on the City Council’s website. The speakers and topics include Catriona Crowe, of the National Archives of Ireland, speaking on the topic of ‘Archives and Society’; Dr. Raymond Gillespie of NUI Maynooth, on ‘Why Archives Matter’; Eunan O’Halpin TCD will discuss ‘The Archives and the decade of commemorations: The Iconic versus the enduring’; Benjamin van De Wetering will speak on the topic of ‘Protecting your Archives, Caring for your Collection’; Lar Joyce of the National Museum of Ireland’s theme will be ‘Collecting the Nation: Archival Material in the National Museum of Ireland’s Collection’. Our international speaker coming from Switzerland is Christian Schneeberger, of the Swiss Theatre Archives, who will speak on the subject of ‘The Digital Challenge-Archives of the Future-The Future of Archives’. Comdt. Padraic Kennedy , from the Defence Forces will speak about ‘Military Archives on Line: A Case Study using Flickr as an online photo gallery’. Galway City Council and the Heritage Council of Ireland are funding the conference jointly, which is an action of the City Heritage Plan. The conference is being co-ordinated by staff of Galway City including the Heritage Officer Dr. Jim Higgins. Conferences places are limited and booking is essential. The conference fee is nominally set at €10, concessions €5, which includes for a light lunch.
