‘JOY’ selected poetry from Máire Holmes will be launched in Kenny’s Gallery, Galway on September 21st at 6.P.M. This special ‘open mike’ session will add an Irish flavour to the International Cultural event.
Máire Holmes is a bilingual, poet playwright, writer and broadcaster. 2012 celebrates her sixtieth birthday and also the launching of JOY, published by EMAL. Her plays have been staged at An Taibhdhearc, RTE radio and in Dublin’s Peacock Theatre. Recipient of a Hennessy Literary Award for fiction, other awards include the Bank of Ireland, Comhairle Chondae Na Gaillimhe, Arts award. DÚRÚN (I988) was published by Coiscéim. Poetry from this book was selected for the Leaving Certificate syllabus.
As Outreach writer for the National University of Ireland, Galway (1998-2008), her enthusiasm for the written word is as alive today as it was decades ago. “Creativity needs to reveal itself, be it music, sculpting, painting or poetry.” Máire Holmes has an MA in writing from NUIG and an Education award in Counselling Psychology & Therapy. She is a regular visitor to schools for Poetry Ireland, Pléaraca, and Udaras Na Gaeltachta. “Both languages can be an adventure, steered by the axle of one heart. If imagery dances in the dark, mystery briefly unveils;-I leave that job to the mystics! Máire seizes this opportunity to thank all who have organised the launch of JOY on International Culture night.
