The poets of Co. Clare in the late Eighteenth and early Nineteenth centuries

The Galway-based Western Writers’ Centre – Ionad Scríbhneoirí Chaitlín Maude – is eager to find out more about the poets of Co. Clare in the late Eighteenth and early Nineteenth centuries, as the Centre works towards a celebration event of these poets. The Centre’s director, a poet himself, Fred Johnston, who founded Galway’s annual Cúirt literature festival in 1986, is particularly interested in the regions spanning Sixmilebridge, West Clare, and up to the borders of Limerick. 

“We know that these areas fostered a rich poetic tradition as Gaeilge throughout this period,” says Johnston, “but often the poets of the period are ignored in contemporary anthologies. Poets such as Séamus Ó Dála, a native of Inagh, Sean Ó Hairchinnigh of Kilkee, Tomás Ó hAllurain in Milltown Malbay – the list, when investigated, is lengthy.”

 

Most of these poets are labelled as being ‘minor’ poets, but that is not to suggest that their contribution to Irish poetry should be down-played or ignored, he suggests. “We need to know more about them and to celebrate them, perhaps not as a ‘school’ of poets as such, but for their work in its own right.”

 

The Centre is looking for anyone with a more concise knowledge of the work of these poets, who might be able to contribute to a planned weekend commemorating them, involving talks and readings. “I’ve been thinking about this for some time now. Is there someone who might comfortably deliver a paper on the poetic tradition around these poets?” The conference, which is aimed at a weekend, will be held in Co. Clare. The Western Writers’ Centre is also anxious to hear from potential sponsors of this event. Fred Johnston’s latest collection of poetry, ‘Alligator Days,’ will be published from Limerick’s Revival Poetry in November. Since its inception in 2007, it has grown to become one of the most important competition’s for emerging writers in Ireland and internationally. The competition is open to both poets and fiction writers worldwide. The total prize money is €1,000. The best fiction entry will win €300. The best poetry entry will win €300. One of these will then be chosen as the overall winner and will receive an additional €400, giving the overall winner total prize money of €700 and the title Over The Edge New Writer of The Year 2013. The 2013 Over The Edge New Writer of The Year will be a Featured Reader at Ireland’s leading literary reading series, the Over The Edge: Open Readings in Galway City Library, on a date to be scheduled in Winter 2013/14. Salmon Poetry will read, without commitment to publish, a manuscript submitted to them by the winner in the poetry category. Doire Press will read, without commitment to publish, a manuscript of short stories submitted to them by the winner in the fiction category. Altissimo Quintet, Ireland’s only viola quintet, visits Galway for the first time on Tuesday 9 April at Hotel Meyrick at 8pm. This second last concert of the current Music for Galway series holds a special treat in store with the world premiere of Stephen Gardner’s ‘Bicycles’, an 8-minute piece specially composed for the ensemble.

Altissimo Quintet features some of Ireland’s top string players who particularly encourage Irish contemporary composers to help them broaden the repertoire for this rich musical genre, hence the partnership with Stephen Gardner.

Preceding this world premiere will be Brahms’ String Quintet No. 2. At the time of writing this piece, the composer was seriously considering giving up writing music. However, a friend, Theodor Billroth wrote to him after hearing it rehearsed: ‘Today I heard enthusiastic shouts, “The most beautiful music he has ever composed!” … I have often reflected on the subject of what happiness is for humanity. Well, today in listening to your music, that was happiness.’ His letter evidently didn’t do any harm, for Brahms went on to give us such masterpieces as the wonderful Clarinet Trio Op. 114.

Closing out the evening will be Dvorak’s American Quintet, penned during a very happy time while holidaying in Spillville, a small town in Iowa. Having spent his first season in New York, he wrote with delight: “I was walking in the woods by the stream and heard the singing of birds for the first time in eight months!”  This melodious folk-inspired piece was the result.

Altissimo Quintet gave its first public concert in the summer of 2011, going on to perform regularly in Dublin. 2013 will see them venture further afield. Under new leadership from acclaimed Northern Irish violinist, Joanne Quigley, this year’s performances will be augmented by concerts for the Music for Galway series as well others north of the border. They will also be giving composition workshops across Ireland, North and South, throughout 2014, reaching out to audiences and new composers alike.

West Ocean String Quartet to Play Aula Maxima at NUI Galway

The West Ocean String Quartet: Seamus McGuire, a distinguished medical graduate of NUI Galway and Niamh Crowley – violin, Ken Rice – viola and Neil Martin – cello in partnership with NUI Galway College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences will perform in the Aula Maxima at NUI Galway on the 18th of April at 8pm. The concert celebrates the new album An Indigo Sky. Proceeds on the night will go toward Voluntary Services Abroad (VSA).

A potent collage of timbres and hues, An Indigo Sky is bold, passionate and unapologetic. Central to it is Neil Martin’s four-movement suite from which the album takes its name, commissioned in memory of Joseph Browne, a former medical student of NUI Galway from Knockmeal on the Clare/Galway border who died tragically in 2006.

Additionally, alongside traditional and newly – composed pieces sits music by Turlough Carolan and Thomas Moore. In a rare and much-coveted 5 star review of the album, The Irish Times talked of this “magnificently elegiac recording” being “a shimmering delight”.  This concert will also draw from the quartet’s three other albums.

Formed in 1999, the West Ocean String Quartet’s vision, eclectic repertoire and style have won them global praise. Their music lies somewhere in between the worlds of classical and traditional. Disregarding rules and boundaries, they have found for themselves a unique voice, and have collaborated with many leading artists, both on stage and in the studio, including Christy Moore, Matt Molloy, Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill, Mary Black, Liam O’Flynn and Brian Kennedy.

The quartet’s debut CD, Unwrapping Dreams (2004), was released to very considerable acclaim both in Ireland and around the globe. It won the award for Best Newcomers Album in Chicago’s American Live Ireland Awards that year and a BBC television documentary on the quartet followed. Universal praise continued with their second cd, The Guiding Moon (2006) featuring The Chieftains’ flute player Matt Molloy.  Their third CD, Ae Fond Kiss (2009), with special guest Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill, similarly garnered applause worldwide.

The quartet has performed widely, including sell-out performances in Dublin’s National Concert Hall, Belfast’s Waterfront Hall and Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall.  Their music has taken them to USA and France and their appeal is truly universal – all three of the quartet’s cds were played aboard the International Space Station in 2011.

The March ‘Over The Edge: Open Reading’ takes place in Galway City Library onThursday, March 28^th, 6.30-8.00pm. The Featured Readers are Colm Keegan, Yvonne McEvaddy & Pat McDonnell. There will as usual be an open-mic after the Featured Readers have finished. New readers are especially welcome.

Pat McDonnell  writes fiction (which doesn’t pay the bills) as an antidote to his work in mechanical engineering (which does pay the bills). He lives in Galway where he plays flute in pub sessions and aspires to write his one great novel. In 2011, he compiled a collection of short stories into  a book Straight Out of Rehab and Udder Storys. He gave away all seven copies of the first edition during Christmas 2011 and subsequently printed seven copies of the second edition, which he also plans to give away soon. He believes that seven is a lucky number. He was shortlisted for the 2012 Over the Edge New Writer of the Year competition.

Yvonne McEvaddy lives in Headford. She is the author of two novels, Passion Killer andShadows of the Dead. She was long-listed in the 2012 Over the Edge New Writer of the Year competition.  She took part in the first ever short story compiled by tweets, found at: http://www.eastcoast.co.uk/shortcrimestory. Yvonne is a member of the Java Writers, who, before Christmas, published Infusions, an anthology of their work. She recently collaborated with a group of writers from around the globe to write an ebook called 8 Slices of Cake. She is currently working on her third novel, and a children’s book.

Colm Keegan has read and performed his poetry at various festivals, including the Flat Lakes Festival, Electric Picnic and the Festival of World Cultures. He was the All Ireland Slam Poetry Champion in 2010. He also writes short stories and screenplays and has been shortlisted four times for the Hennessy New Irish Writing Award for both poetry and fiction. In 2008 he was shortlisted for the International Seán Ó Faoláin Short Story Competition. In 2011 he was nominated for the Absolut Fringe’s ‘Little Gem’ Award for the play Three Men Talking About Things They Kinda Know About (co-written with Kalle Ryan and Stephen James Smith) which is touring 2012/2013.  He is a poetry/arts reviewer and contributing poet for RTE Radio One’s nightly arts show ARENA and co-founder of ‘Nighthawks at the Cobalt’. He is co-founder and facilitator of Inklinks, a young writers club in Clondalkin and teaches creative writing in secondary schools across Ireland. He maintains a popular blog and his poetry performances are widely viewed on YouTube. He is currently finishing his first novel. Colm’s debut collection of poetry, Don’t Go There, was published last year by Salmon Poetry.

The book will be launched by Reverend Canon Maureen Ryan atGalway City Museum on Saturday, March 23^rd at 2pm.Everyone is welcome.  

Maureen Ryan has lived most of her adult life in Galway. She has published two novels and over 400 academic papers, essays, sermons, meditations and reflections. She is a psychologist, a Priest in the Church of Ireland and a Canon in the National Cathedral of St. Patrick’s, Dublin.

In The God Thing, Susan Millar DuMars writes with compassion and clarity about the terminal illness and death of a family member, and her own resulting struggle to keep faith and love alive within herself.  The poems question and rage, and find unexpected moments of humour and buoyancy.  DuMars looks for God in the stories of the Bible’s women; in the transcendent paintings of Matisse and the soulful images of Hopper; in the transience of cities, the memory of mountains, the freedom of water and the spilt sugar stars in the sky.  An excavation of grief which unearths, if not the Divine, then hope – as necessary and fragile as our next breath.

‘Glorious Freaks’- An art and photography exhibition

NUI Galway’s Feminist Society in association with the University Theatre and Arts Advisory Group are proud to present their up and coming art and photography exhibition entitled ‘Glorious Freaks’. The event will be held in the QuadArtGallery from the 4^th to the 8^th of March 2013 to coincide with International Women’s Day and will focus around the theme of ‘Body Image’.
There will be work on sale from a variety of painters, visual artists and photographers who’s names include Daire Lynch, Deirdre Robb, Mary Roantree, Gillian Campden, Sandra Hickey, Kayes Maahs, Nicki Cheevers, Sonya Whitefield, Gina Concannon, Rynes Walker, Ingela Sternburg, Ramona Burke and internationally acclaimed feminist photographer, Angela Kelly.
Opening night will be held on the 4^th of March with guest speakers from ‘Endangered Bodies’ and complementary cheese and wine served. There will be further celebrations in the gallery on Friday the 8^th for International Women’s Day which will be a BYOB event. Doors will open at 6.00pm on the 4^th and the 8^th with funds being raised for the Galway Rape Crisis Centre.
The Exhibition will be open during the week at 11.30am to 5.00pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, 2.00pm to 5.00pm Thursday and from 11.30am until 10.30 Friday.

Cúirt International Festival of Literature 2013

We are delighted to announce the programme launch for the Cúirt International Festival of Literature 2013. The launch will be held in the House Hotel, Lower Merchants Road in the Latin Quarter, on the 12 March at 6pm. The festival will run from 23-28 April, and will feature readings, book launches, literary outings, theatre, and children’s events. This year Cúirt will officially open on Wednesday 24^th April with President Michael D. Higgins. The opening night features poets Seamus Heaney and Michael Longley. Other programme highlights include a retrospective interview with Edna O’Brien centred on her memoir Country Girl, appearances by This Book Will Save Your Life author A.M. Homes, award winning American novelist Ron Rash, Irish author Claire Keegan, as well as a Random House crime panel and more. The festival will include a wide range of thematic talks and discussions with authors: Sheila Heti, Laurent Binet, Tishani Doshi, Lucy Caldwell,  Keith Ridgway and Ben Marcus.

 This year’s festival will also include a new EU cultural initiative: The Crossroads of European Literature. This project has Cúirt teaming up with literary festivals in Slovenia and Italy and will include writer residencies, a reading and a seminar event. Another exciting new addition to the festival is the Cúirt Labs, a conference for young people which will present a variety of activities and talks on the creative industry for primary school and secondary school students.

MUSIC FOR GALWAY & GALWAY MUSIC RESIDENCY PRESENT: CD Launch and Members’ Concert. Tuesday 5 March. Town Hall Theatre Bar, 1.10  – 1.50 pm. CD Launch Dreams & Prayers. Paul Roe, clarinet, bass clarinet. ConTempo Quartet, Galway Ensemble in Residence. This March sees a very special installment of the Galway Music Residency’s lunchtime series in the Town Hall Theatre, with the launch of the CD Dreams & Prayerson March 5th at 1.10pm,  a concert featuring clarinetist Paul Roe and ConTempo Quartet performing music for clarinet, bass clarinet and string quartet.

Dreams & Prayers, a very successful programme which was originally presented as part of the Music for Galway season 2009-2010, and subsequently recorded by Paul Roe and ConTempo Quartet, includes a specially commissioned piece by Nick Roth, Jane O’Leary’s Soundshapes II and the work that gives the title to the CD, Argentinian Composer Oswaldo Golijov’s Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind.

Dreams & Prayers was recorded for the label Quartz and co-produced by the Residency in association with Music for Galway and Paul Roe.

Paul Roe is a musician with particular interests in performance, research, education and participative music making. He has a PhD in Performance Practice from the University of York, a Masters Degree in Community Music from the University of Limerick and is a Fellow of Trinity College, London. He was Associate Principal Clarinet of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland from 1987-2000, has been a member of Concorde Contemporary Music Ensemble since 1989. Paul is a member of the teaching staff at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin and also teaches at the DIT Conservatory of Music.

 ConTempo was formed in 1995 when the members were students at the Music University in Bucharest, Romania. Recognised as one of the world’s top string quartets, ConTempo has won a record of 14 international prizes and has performed more than 1,000 concerts all over the world. After an international recruitment, ConTempo String Quartet was selected to be at the heart of a music development programme for Galway City and County.  Since the beginning, this vibrant string quartet from Romania have brought the joy of music to audiences in Galway City, County and beyond through their hundreds of performances, educational activities and collaborative projects.  ConTempo have made invaluable contributions to our community by sharing their talents through performances with thousands of audience members; by mentoring aspiring young musicians; and by introducing classical music to young school children very often for the first time. Through collaborative projects they have enhanced our musical experience by performing with a wide variety of international artists across all genres.

This season Music for Galway for the first time sends out an open invitation to all for its Members’ concert on Thursday 7 March at the Aula Maxima, NUI Galway at 8pm. It features internationally renowned soprano Lynda Lee and Andreija Malíř, principal harpist with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. The concert will be followed by a reception.

Lynda Lee comes from County Antrim and studied singing in Dublin with Dr. Veronica Dunne. She received several prestigious awards during her studies. She made her professional debut with Opera Theatre Company in Handel’s Tamerlano and went on to have a long association with the composer making frequent appearances at many Handel Festivals throughout Europe. In recent years she has made many return trips to Halle, Handel’s birthplace, to take part in his birthday celebratory Messiah with amalgamated choirs from all over the world.

Having performed at various opera houses in Germany she was subsequently invited to go on contract with the Leipzig Opera. Roles during her time with this company include Elisabeth in Tannhauser, Title role in Schumann’s Genoveva, First Lady In The Magic Flute and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. Lynda also has a busy concert schedule. She has taken part in a ten year project to perform all of Bach’s Cantatas at St Ann’s Church in Dublin with a variety of choirs and conductors. She also performs regularly with the RTE orchestras in a wide variety of repertoire. She is also a member of the recently formed Academy Chamber Ensemble with whom she will shortly tour China and several EU states as part of Ireland’s EU Presidency. She is a member of the Vocal Faculty at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin.

Andreja Malíř has been Principal Harpist with the RTE National Symphony Orchestra since 1988. With the RTE NSO, she has performed all the major harp concerti including the Concerto for harp by Philip Martin, commissioned especially for her by RTE, which she recorded to critical acclaim for the Marco Polo label.

Throughout her career Andreja has enjoyed considerable success in the fields of solo, chamber and concerto performances both at home and internationally, touring as far afield as China, Canada, America, and all over Europe including stepping in at short notice to perform Scheherazade with the Kirov Orchestra under Valery Gergiev.

A ‘dabbler’ in composition, Andreja was commissioned by RTE lyric fm to compose a song cycle for soprano and harp on a setting of poems by W.B. Yeats with soprano Lynda Lee and which made it on to the ‘Hiccup’ CD celebrating 10 years of the best Lyric commissions.Tickets are €20, concession €16 and full time students pay €6. The February ‘Over The Edge: Open Reading’ takes place in Galway City Library on Thursday, February 28^th, 6.30-8.00pm. The Featured Readers are Mia Gallagher, Dawn Wisniewski & Ruth Quinlan. There will as usual be an open-mic after the Featured Readers have finished. New readers are especially welcome. The evening will also see the announcement of details of this year’s Over The Edge New Writer of The Year competition, which will then be made available on our website http://overtheedgeliteraryevents.blogspot.com

Ruth Quinlan is from Tralee, County Kerry. She worked in IT before taking a break in 2011 to try and scratch the writing itch and graduated from the MA in Writing at NUI Galway in 2012. She was shortlisted for the 2012 Cúirt New Writing fiction prize and longlisted for last year’s Over the Edge New Writer of the Year competition. Her work has been published by Emerge Literary Journal, Thresholds, SIN, Scissors and Spackle and she is shortlisted for the current Irish Independent Hennessy New Irish Writing awards. She recently contributed towards two group anthologies, Abandoned Darlings (fiction) and Wayword Tuesdays (poetry). You can find her blogging occasionally at ruthquinlan.wordpress.com.

Despite a lengthy career in the logical world of information technology, Dawn Wisniewski has carved a tunnel into the creative side of her brain, allowing her to formulate everything from poetry to fantasy worlds, and even a little artistry on the side.  With the help of Kevin Higgins’ poetry workshops, she has gained not only confidence in her poetic ventures but better skills to craft her prose.  Also aided by Susan Millar-Dumars’ classes, Dawn has developed a portfolio of short stories and enhancements to the series of fantasy novels she has written.  With the first of the series of novels finally ready for submission, Dawn is actively seeking an agent or publisher.

Mia Gallagher is a writer and performer based in Dublin. She has written many short stories and is working on a third novel. Her short fiction won the START Short Fiction award (2005) and was shortlisted for the Fish, Hennessy and William Trevor/Elizabeth Bowen Awards. Her debut novel HellFire (Penguin Ireland, 2006) was critically acclaimed and received the Irish Tatler Literature Award. An extract from her second novel Beautiful Pictures of the Lost Homeland appeared last year in Literary Imagination (Oxford University Press).  In September 2012, Carpet Theatre produced The Trick and Burning Love, two of her adaptations of plays from the classic if schlocky Grand Guignol Theatre of Horror! In 2012 she appeared as the female lead in TG4 docudrama The Enigma of Frank Ryan, which has shown at film festivals internationally. Mia was writer-in-residence at IADT/dlr Arts Office in 2009-2010.

As usual there will be an open-mic after the Featured Readers have finished. New readers are always most welcome at the open-mic. North Beach Poetry Nights returns in The Crane Bar with Kimberly Campanello

North Beach Poetry Nights returns on Monday 25th February in The Crane Bar, Sea Road, Galway at the very NEW TIME of 6.30 pm with Special Guest Kimberly Campanello (Dublin).

Kimberly Campanello was born in Elkhart, Indiana. She now lives in Dublin. Her chapbook ‘Spinning Cities’ was published by Wurm Press in 2011. She was featured poet in the Summer 2010 issue of The Stinging Fly;her poems have appeared in magazines in the US, UK, and Ireland, including Tears in the Fence, nthposition, Burning Bush II, Abridged, The Penny Dreadful, and Irish Left Review.

In 2011, she was selected to read as part of the Poetry Ireland Introductions Series. Kimberly’s first full collection ‘CONSENT’ will be available from Doire Press in May 2013. Poets wishing to enter the Slam on the night need 2 max. three minutes poems. The poem for the 2nd round should be performed without script.

Irish Theatre Magazine on FOLLOW, Dublin Fringe Festival 2011

Shane O Reilly is a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) and has grown up in the Irish Deaf Community. Last year he approached WillFredd Theatre with a question: Is it possible to create a truly integrated piece of theatre, that is fully accessible to both a Deaf and Hearing audience?

WillFredd Theatre took the challenge on the chin and went into the local Deaf Community to meet with people and to hear their stories and experiences of growing up as part of the Deaf Community in a hearing world.

FOLLOW went on to be the surprise hit of the 2011 ABSOLUT Fringe wining the coveted Spirit of the Fringe Award. The response to the performance from hearing and non-hearing audience members alike was phenomenal.

WillFredd Theatre were amazed to find out that this first piece of its kind in Ireland which integrates ISL (Irish Sign Language ) with performance in this unique way. FOLLOW is the first piece of theatre in Ireland created for both a Deaf and Hearing audience and is inspired by sign language as a form of communication and narrative device.

FOLLOW tells humorous and moving stories and experiences from the Irish Deaf community through Galway favourite Jack Cawley’s live music, light, ISL, (Irish Sign Language) and traditional story telling.

Follow – Developed as part of Project Brand New. Supported by Arts & Disabiity Ireland, ABSOLUT Fringe, CREATE, Dublin City Council, The Arts Council and Rough Magic Hub. This tour has been made possible thanks to the Arts Council Touring and Disseminaton Of Work Scheme.

Manologues tells the story of eight males searching for a meaning in contemporary Ireland. • Following from their sold-out shows last year, Ireland’s premiere youth circus, Galway Community Circus is continuing its successful collaboration with Ireland’s foremost Aerial Dance Theatre Company, Fidget Feet for this contemporary circus spectacle. Combining gravity defying aerial dance, daring vertical dance on harnesses and stunning visual images through video projections, this is a show not to be missed. The Circus of Lir is a show created and performed by approximately 150 young Galway Community Circus members between 5-20 years of age with the support of the Arts Council Young Ensemble Scheme, Fidget Feet Aerial Dance Theatre, Fanzini Brothers and storyteller Clare Murphy.

• Follow him. To a place where sound is a feeling and signs are all around. Shane O’Reilly is a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults). Shane’s parents are deaf. He grew up in a house with doorbell lights and subtitles on the TV. A house where to be heard, you had to be seen.

• .Oxford Women’s Chorale & Oxford Voices

• St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church

• The Oxford Women’s Chorale and Oxford Voices are visiting Galway as part of an 8-day tour of Ireland. The two choirs are all students from Oxford High School, Oxford, Michigan, USA a town located 40 miles south of Detroit. The talented young performers have won many awards for the high standard and quality of their singing and in 2011 were invited to perform at New York’s famed Carnegie Hall. The choirs sing all genres of chorale music but specialise in American traditional music. For the concert at St Nicholas, the programme will feature Native American folk songs, African American spirituals, Quaker hymns and American traditional folk tunes.
